to go to the Aquarium Doctor

If  we understand the basic physiological requirements and assume the very serious responsibility of caring and maintaining these delicate creatures,  it is possible to enjoy a very interesting and rewarding hobby.

When you think of your fish as a pet you'll agree, they deserve the best care and attention you can provide. A healthy aquarium is relatively easy to achieve and maintain, but it will not happen by itself... it depends on you.

BREEDING THE ALBINO CORY

CORYDORAS AENEUS

--M

Care and feeding:

Since they are omnivorous these fish will generally eat all kinds of live fresh and flake foods. To keep a good balance give them a high quality flake food everyday. Feed brine shrimp (either live or frozen) or blood worms as a treat.

Distribution:

These fish are found in the La Plata river in southeast Brazil.

Size - Weight:

These fish get up to 2.5 inches (7 cm).

Social Behaviors:

They are a good community fish.

Sexual Differences:

The female is larger and always the leader of the group

Water Region: Top, Middle, Bottom:

These fish will swim in the bottom of the aquarium.

Acceptable Water Conditions:

Hardness: 2-25° dGH

Ph: 6.0 to 8.0

Temp: 72-80° F (22-27° C)

Corys

(Armored Catfish)

Secure at least five adult fish, a large female and four males. (The males are always smaller)

To prepare a group for breeding set up a tank with large leafed plants. (Amazon Sword plants are very good for this purpose.) They will use the leaves and the sides of the aquarium for spawning.

Do a water change.

Suggested water conditions for breeding: pH: 6.0-6.5, hardness: 4° dGH

Feed the group Andres Special Blend Flake Food, plenty of frozen blood worms and frozen brine shrimp, if live foods are available they like live mosquito larva and brine shrimp.

During spawning the female will hold the eggs between her pelvic fins while the male fertilizes them. This takes about 30 seconds for each batch of eggs. The female will then deposit the eggs on a selected leaf or on the glass of the aquarium. This will continue until about 100 eggs are deposited. After spawning the group should be separated from the eggs.

I separate the eggs from the group. Gently scrape the eggs off of the glass with a razor blade. (Always be very careful when using a razor blade.) Gently place the eggs on a hard plastic tube. ( The size used for an airstone.) Cut the stem of the leaf with the eggs and attach it with a twisted rubber  band to a rock or  use an old airstone to weigh it down. Put the eggs in a small plastic holding tank. I use a small one gallon tank with a foam or under gravel filter. Use a 25watt heater with a thermostat. Keep at about 78 degrees. Place the leaf with the air bubbles rising up the egg side. Place the tube with the bubbles gently going  past the eggs. The eggs should be well aerated and the water treated with Methylene Blue Trihydrate to prevent fungus from growing on the eggs. Change 50% of the water when the fry start to hatch. When doing a water change be sure the water parameters are always the same.

The fry will hatch after four or five days, they use up their yolksac after 3 days. They can be fed rotifers, (if available) fine crushed flake food, Artemia nauplii (baby frozen brine shrimp)and the crushed contents of blanched cooked fresh peas.

I do find that the fry are a little more difficult to raise to adulthood than most other cory's, so keep the water changes up.

Put the fry in a larger tank as soon as possible. When doing a water change always be sure the parameters are the same.
