Most of us are very anxious to get our marine world
started. One of the best reference books available that
I can recommend is,
SIMON & SCHUSTER'S COMPLETE GUIDE
TO..............
FRESHWATER AND MARINE AQUARIUM
FISHES
A guide for beginners and
experts alike, Simon & Schuster's Guide to Freshwater and Marine Aquarium
Fishes is the most useful book an aquarium enthusiast can own. Whether you
are interested in goldfish, guppies, or the most exotic marine species, the
opening section on starting an aquarium covers everything you need to know.
Illustrated in color throughout, the 295 entries cover plants, amphibia,
reptiles, and invertebrates as well as aquarium fishes. Each entry provides
the common name, scientific name, and family; distribution of the species
in the wild; a description of shape, color, and size; information about sexual
differences, feeding habits, reproduction, compatibility with
other species, and much more. Next to each entry are easy-to-read symbols
that indicate the proper water temperature, pH, and illumination.
This comprehensive guide gives you all
the information you need to maintain a beautiful, balanced, and thriving
aquarium.

The hardest part is raising the food to feed the

And that is more a matter of establishing a daily

Much of our research is being conducted in the
field of reef farming. We are conducting these studies both in marine aquariums
and in the ocean. Reef aquarium research is being conducted by members of
the foundation both in the U.S. and in several other countries. We have been
researching the best ways to control algae in reef aquariums for several
years.
Our REEF JANITORS are becoming the most popular
algae eaters in the reef hobby.
We also supply expert advice on algae control
for marine aquariums, wetlands and backyard ponds.
We provide quality educational programs to students
here in Idaho and online. We have marine aquarium tours that are attended
by hundreds of students each year. We are available to speak at aquarium
clubs.
Our students propagate many of the invertebrates
that we sell. Our collection of reef animals is growing very fast. You can
join our research team by filling out one of the data collection forms on

WELCOME TO ORA
Oceans, Reefs and Aquariums (ORA) marine ornamental
hatchery produces aquacultured saltwater fish, invertebrates and live aquarium
foods for the marine aquarium hobby. We are the largest producer and seller
of marine ornamentals in the world. The ORA hatchery complex is located at
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) in Ft. Pierce, Florida. ORA
is the largest marine ornamental hatchery in North America and we are constantly
developing new techniques to bring the finest captive bred specimens to
environmentally conscientious aquarists throughout the world.
Aquacultured marine life is the only alternative
to wild caught fish and invertebrates for aquariums. ORA farm-raised fish
help you avoid the uncertainty of capture, handling, transport, and disease
associated with wild caught fish. Our fish are raised in an aquarium environment
from the time they are born and therefore are exceedingly hardy as aquarium
inhabitants.

| Corals exhibit sexual and asexual
reproduction.
The coral colony expands in size by budding. Budding
may be intratentacular, in which the new bud forms from the oral discs of
the old polyp, as in Diploria, or extratentacular in which the new polyp
forms from the base of the old polyp, as in Montastraea cavernosa.
A common type of asexual reproduction in corals
is by fragmentation. Broken pieces of corals that land on a suitable substrate
may begin growing and produce a new colony. This type of reproduction is
common in branching corals like Acropora cervicornis in which a positive
correlation was found between fragment size and survival.

Many coral species mass spawn. Within a 24 hour period,
all the corals from one species and often within a genus release their eggs
and sperm at the same time. This occurs in related species of Montastraea,
and in other genera such as Montipora, Platygra, Favia, and Favites (Wallace,
1994). In some Montastraea and Acropora species, the eggs and sperm are released
in a sack. They float to the surface where they separate and fertilization
takes place. Intraspecies is common but mass spawning raises the possibility
of hybridization by congeneric species (Wallace, 1994). The zygote develops
into larvae called planula which attaches itself to a suitable substrate
and grows into a new colony.
Some species of coral brood their larvae. The sperm
fertilizes the egg before both are released from the coral. The larvae float
to the top, settle, and become another colony. Species of Acropora release
brooded larvae.

Tank-Bred Fish
Managing our marine resources is a key part
of the long-term success of the aquarium hobby. Tank-bred fish are an integral
part of the equation. Due to recent advancements in marineculture and fish
farming, it's now possible to successfully breed and rear many species of
marine fish in large numbers.

is by far the healthiest

healthier for

Environmental Impact of
Saltwater Aquariums?
I was wondering if you could answer a quick question
for me? I would like to setup a salt water live reef tank, but my fiancée
is objecting to the idea because of environmental impact concerns.
She has read that the techniques for catching fish
and harvesting reefs are VERY destructive and that for every fish that makes
it into a tank - many more die. She does not want to support anything that
is resulting in excess environmental damage.
It seems that the only fish that can be
breed
in captivity are the smaller clown fish. If this
is true then are there any
companies that are catching fish in a sustainable
and environmentally
conscience manner. I imagine that most of the mass
overseas distributors
are using some levels of destructive practices.
Also, do they really grow
the coral that they sell? It seems like the stuff
would grow too slow to
make it economically feasible to farm.
Answer
There are many
other marine fish that are being spawned by commercial wholesalers besides
clownfish. Last months Tropical fish hobbyist magazine featured an article
about Bangui Cardinal fish being spawned. Actually over thirty species are
being breed and raised at this time. One of our club members (Shawn Prescott)
has a Shrimp farm in Singapore and he is successfully breeding
the
Batfish (Platax
tiera),
Ocellanis Clowns(Amphiprion
ocellanis),
Tomato Clowns (Amphiprion frenatus),
Sebae Clowns( Amphiprion
sebae ),
Orchid Dottyback (Pseudochromis
fridmani),
Yellow Tail Blues (Chrysiptera
cyanea),
Mandarin Goby (Synchiropus picturatus
)
and the Marine Comet Betta (Calloplesiops
altevelis).
As far as the environmental impact of the Marine
hobby, the greatest abuses come from the misinformed and misguided new comers
to the hobby that see the lives of these fish as merely dollar signs and
something that can be replaced. The hobby has much to offer to the environment
as well. The knowledge gained from keeping marine fish gives one a greater
appreciation of what really makes the ocean tick and how complicated a process
it really is. As far as raping the oceans to harvest corals for the hobbyist,
yes that does go on at times in places on the globe. However great strides
had been made in this country in the field of Aquaculture
especially in the propagation of corals to be provided
to the hobbyist. Some of these "Coral farms" have grown and propagated over
twenty different species of coral. Some of the corals being propagated include
species of Acropora,and Xenia.
These Coral farms can produce three crops a year
and are continually learning new ways to speed up coral growth by using
Kalkwasser and other ingredients to greatly reduce nitrates and still keeping
calcium levels and pH values at optimum levels. So I do believe the marine
hobby in the past has been very eco-destructive, but the true hobbyists are
reshaping the way we think about our natural jewels of the sea and becoming
more responsible and even turning the tables back in favor of many species
that call the seas their home. Just a reminder, it is not only the marine
hobby that has had an impact, the fresh water hobbyists have made just as
great of a destructive impact on the environment as well. Many none native
fish have been introduced to the waters of places like Florida and just about
wiped out some of our native species. Man has had an impact on fish even
in non aquarium related endeavors for instance introducing fish as a food
source to areas that were once unique, an example is the rift lakes. Tilapia
were thought to be a good way to provide food to many poorer nations, but
in reality thousands endemic species have been lost as a result. Many freshwater
spawning programs have often resulted in rising populations of once endangered
species. And new regulations on waste water treatment are all programs most
likely originally adopted by someone that was an Aquarius or at least someone
that gained an understanding of the fragile ecosystem we really do depend
on for survival ourselves.
